5Well constructed, great tool choiceMay 06, 2010
Update: 5/6/2010 - As of this writing the Spirit multi-tool combo (including a Rally knife) has a $10 instant rebate so the combo is actually $1 cheaper than the Spirit w/Pouch. I picked up another one :D

The strangest thing about the Spirit multi-tools is that it feels both incredibly high-tech and at the same time like some ritual object. There's this *tradition* about it that I'd normally scoff at, but the quality of the Spirit is so high that I have to attribute it to years and years of almost worshipful attention to detail. And yet, there's a surgical quality to the workmanship. It's precise; it's fluid. For example, there's no spring assist on the pliers, but the action is so smooth that at first I wasn't sure. That's how good it is.

I have many multi-tools including several Leatherman Waves, Gerber Suspension and Strata, SOGs, and a host of lesser known manufacturers. And though I enjoy watching Survivorman episodes and making camp stoves from coffee cans, most of my time spent with these tools is in the yard or the garage or in the office.

The Spirit is about a centimeter longer and slightly slimmer than the Leatherman Wave when closed. When the pliers are opened they are both within a couple millimeters in length. It has all the standard tools including a blade, file, scissors, bottle opener, Phillips/slotted drivers, awl, and even a chisel/scraper. The tools are all accessible with the pliers closed. Unlike the Wave which has an industrial stylishness, the Spirit is more refined, more elegant. Which is not to imply in any way that it is less rugged. It's easily one of the sturdies multi-tools that I own, and that's dozens.

About the only downside -- and this is a stretch -- is the almost mirror-like finish of the metal. My hands tends to perspire and it feels a bit slick. The grip is good though, and the handles are long enough to make this a non-issue.

5The best, seriouslyApr 09, 2010
I have had the chance to use some of the other top models by Gerber and Leatherman. Take my word for it, the SwissTool is in a higher class than any others. The level of precision engineering is unparalleled by other brands. The action is super-smooth and the tools are all super-sharp and ridiculously durable. This is a perfect blend of beauty and functionality. Others have mentioned the lack of removable pins, which is a slight disadvantage. Other than that, I personally believe this multi-tool to be the best in its class. I use this tool everyday many times and it takes a beating, but still functions like it did when I first bought it. Worth every penny, even at full retail price, in my opinion.

3Great Quality ...butMar 29, 2010
Here is a review from one who owns both Leatherman Wave (2 years) & Swisstool Spirit.
First I love the build quality of this tool. In fact I had read so many reviews which glorified the quality of the tool I had to get one. The reviews were right but the magic soon wore off. I got the tool as a early Christmas gift for myself, I kept it with me all the time, eager for the chance to use my new toy. When the kids had a hard time opening some boxes ....Swisstool to the rescue!!! But I was SHOCKED when I couldn't open the battery door of a small electronic device my daughter was given. This tool does not have a "micro" type screwdriver.... in today's world that is a no no. To fix this I decided to go for the optional "plus" tool kit for the Spirit. It added alot of bulk to the tool and fully loaded still only allowed for 8 bits!!! The leatherman bit kit gives you about 40 bits !!! If I have to carry something extra might as well get more bang for the buck. The final straw was when I realized that the pliers don't open as wide as the one on the wave or even a juice model that I had. Don't get me wrong I like the tool and really wanted to love it but facts are facts..... outside opening blades, more bits, & versatility .... I gotta go with the Wave.

4I Got Spirit . . . .Jan 30, 2010
When I first got this, I was disappointed because it was smaller than the one's I had seen my friends use (I didn't know there where different size option), but having used it and carried it around, it does everything I need. It looks good and is well made, of course, and fits easily in my backpack side pouch. I may get the larger one down the road to carry in my car, but I'm glad I have this one.
