Eating disorders – anorexia and bulimia in particular – are complex phenomena. The patient with eating disorder maintains a distorted image of their bodies as too fat or something bad (it may be dysmorphic disorder of the body). Many patients with eating disorders are found in occupations where body shape and the selected image (eg ballet student actors, models) can be.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) IV-TR (2000) (p. 584-5):
